Francesca Fusi, the leader of the AI modeling team at Scuderia Ferrari, emphasized the importance of accuracy in these models, stating, “We had the idea to develop an AI model to emulate the ground speed sensor using neural networks.”

The virtual sensors offer a dual advantage: they not only save on the budget but also reduce the car’s weight while still providing essential data for performance optimization. This technological leap is a game-changer within the stringent F1 rules and regulations, including the strict budget cap constraints.

The AI modeling team is tasked with proving the model’s telemetry metrics’ consistency through various race conditions and data processing layers. Technical director Enrico Cardile and head of vehicle performance Marco Adurno lead the Scuderia engineers in implementing hundreds of fixes and changes between each race. The virtual sensors not only benefit weight and cost but also help engineers identify issues in other sensor measurements that might have gone unnoticed.

Moreover, Scuderia Ferrari is utilizing AI to analyze onboard footage from competitors’ cars, a resource made available to all teams by F1. Deep learning models estimate steering angles and other dynamics, providing insights into competitors’ racing strategies. Data scientist Luca Bortolotti highlighted the significance of this analysis: “If our competitor does the same corner at the same speed on the same line with slightly less of a steering angle, that tells us they probably have a more aggressive balance than us.”

The scalability of cloud infrastructure is crucial for Ferrari, allowing the AI modeling team to deploy large compute instances for peak usage while analyzing massive media files. Bortolotti further explained the benefits of the cloud, “We’re able to spool up relatively arbitrary amounts of pretty specialized computational hardware on short notice.”

In addition to video, Ferrari conducts audio analysis on the onboard footage, correlating engine sounds with GPS data to reconstruct competitors’ engine speeds. This process utilizes AWS’s serverless computing infrastructure, enabling rapid data processing without the need for server management.

While much of the Scuderia Ferrari engineering team remains at the headquarters in Maranello, Italy, during race weekends, the cloud is helping bridge the gap between the team and the track.
