As organizations grapple with this data deluge, the imperative for a comprehensive end-to-end data strategy has never been clearer. Such a strategy extends beyond mere technological solutions; it encompasses the upskilling of workers, the cultivation of a data-centric organizational culture, and the promotion of data-driven decision-making and innovation.

Recognizing the critical role of data in today’s business environment, over 80 percent of large companies have now integrated the role of Chief Data Officer (CDO) into their executive ranks. Sebastian Klapdor, EVP and CDO of Vista, a print and graphic design company, shared his experience: “The first thing we did was adopt a data product approach—treating data like a product and strategically developing, launching, supporting, and ensuring success of data products within the organization.”

Fostering a Data-Driven Culture

More than half of the CDOs surveyed emphasized the importance of instilling data literacy across the organization. This involves implementing data literacy programs and change management initiatives. Eileen Vidrine, the Chief Data and AI Officer for the United States Air Force, highlighted the significance of leadership in this endeavor: “It really helps when you have a four-star general and former chief of space operations talking about how he’s taking a Python class. That’s leadership by example.”

An Enablement Approach to Governance

In 2023, CDOs dedicated 63 percent of their time to data governance, a notable increase from the previous year. Effective data governance is about empowering individuals across an organization to innovate and extract insights from data. Klapdor emphasized the need to make data visible, accessible, and user-friendly.

Preparation for AI in All Its Forms

The excitement surrounding generative AI is palpable across industries, with 93 percent of CDOs agreeing on the importance of a data strategy to harness the full potential of this technology. Catherine Miller, CTO of Flatiron Health, advised starting with a customer problem that generative AI can solve: “I start by talking to the leaders of different functions and saying, ‘Tell me your problems.’ I say, ‘Let’s talk about the best tools for solving those problems.’”

Innovation Accessible to All

The “think big, start small, scale fast” approach has yielded tangible ROI for data-driven initiatives. This strategy involves beginning with small experiments, adding capabilities based on need, and then quickly scaling while using data to guide future steps.

The collective insights of Klapdor, Miller, Vidrine, and over 350 CDOs surveyed underscore the importance of addressing measurable business problems with data, exploring new technologies judiciously, and fostering a data-driven ethos within organizations. Vidrine encapsulated the sentiment well: “I like to say data and AI are team sports. If you try to do it by yourself, you’re not going to be as successful as you can. I think that whole collaborative team approach is the key to long-term success.”
